چکیده

Drugs may be given by different routes in order to exert systemic or local effect. From the pharmacokinetics point of view, considering muscles as body compartment, it is important to characterize absorption after intramuscular (IM) drug administration, and drug distribution into muscle following drug administration. IM injection is characterized by invasive procedure puncturing the skin with a needle in order to inject the drug directly into a large body muscle for the prophylactic or therapeutic purposes. The rate and extent of drug absorption are determined by formulation, physicochemical properties of drugs, and physiological characteristics of the site of administration. When intravenously or non-IM drug is administered, distribution may occur at various rates and to various extents in different tissues including muscles. Rate of drug distribution depends on vascular membrane permeability, regional blood flow, cardiac output and perfusion rate of the tissue, while extent of distribution is defined by drug’s ability to bind to Correspondence/Reprint request: Dr. Milica Prostran, Department of Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, School of Medicine, University of Belgrade, P.O.Box 38, 11129, Belgrade, Serbia E-mail: [email protected] Katarina Vučićević et al. 30 plasma and/or tissue proteins, its liposolubility, and relation of pKa of drug and pH of environment. The article gives an overview of the pharmacokinetic aspects of absorption following IM injection, and distribution of drugs in muscular tissue.

Sports activity done five days before PET/CT results in augmented FDG uptake in skeletal muscles

Increased metabolic activity in muscle secondary to excessive muscle activity during the uptake phase and shortly before FDG injection is a known phenomenon. We present FDG PET/CT findings in a young male, known case of carcinoma maxilla His scan showed diffuse increased metabolic activity in multiple skeletal muscle groups. There was history of unaccustomed, strenuous sports activity of skiing...

Effect of progressive resistance exercise on β1 integrin and vinculin protein levels in slow-and fast-twitch skeletal muscles of male rats

Introduction: Skeletal muscle is a flexible and ever changing tissue and the role of costameric proteins in its response to different stimuli is not well defined. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of progressive resistance exercise on β1 integrin and vinculin proteins in fast and slow twitch skeletal muscles of male rats. Methods: Twelve male Wistar rats (weight: 298±5.2 gr...

Effect of Aerobic Exercise with Blood Flow Restriction on Mitochondrial Dynamics Proteins of Human Skeletal Muscles

Background: Aerobic exercise with Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) plays an important role in skeletal muscle adaptation; however, the effects of this type of exercise on mitochondrial dynamics proteins are unclear. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise with and without BFR on mitochondrial dynamics proteins of human skeletal muscles.  Methods: Pa...

Endurance training induces fiber type-specific revascularization in hindlimb skeletal muscles of rats with chronic heart failure

Objective(s): Previous studies showed that skeletal muscle microcirculation was reduced in chronic heart failure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of endurance training on capillary and arteriolar density of fast and slow twitch muscles in rats with chronic heart failure. Materials and Methods: Four weeks after surgeries (left anterior descending (LAD) artery occlusion), chr...

The Effect of High and Low-Intensity Interval Training on TRF1 and TRF2 Gene Expression in Slow and Fast-Twitch Skeletal Muscles of C57BL/6 Mice: An Experimental Study

Background and Objectives: The process of chronic diseases and aging is associated with reduced telomere length. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and low-intensity interval training (LIIT) on telomere repeat binding factor 1 and 2 (TRF1 and TRF2) in Soleus (SOL) muscle as a slow-twitch (ST) and Extensor Digitorum Longus (EDL) muscle ...
